VP Digital Operations
Kevin Fleming’s entertainment business experience is vast and varied. It includes major market radio programing and operations, record company artist repertoire and development, artist management, entertainment content creation and internet publishing.
Kevin’s radio experience includes operation management, program management, air personality and programming consultant for urban, urban adult, urban oldies and community non-commercial radio. He honed his radio craft with stints at Inner City Broadcasting, Cox Media, and Radio One among others, working with iconic radio trailblazers including Bill Shearer, Hal Jackson, Frankie Crocker, Jerry Boulding, Howard Neal, Tom Joyner, Michael Baisden, Barry Mayo, plus Dewy and Cathy Hughes.
Today, Kevin is the Program Director for Pacifica Radio’s Los Angeles outlet, KPFK. Programming a listener supported, non-commercial, Variety format station is a new challenge for the veteran executive. Managing over 100 shows and nearly 175 volunteers and a staff of 30 is no small task but when your passion is radio, you simply embrace the mission.
His expertise in the recording industry encompasses directing promotions, executive level management of artist & repertoire, as well as major label assignments as vice president and general manager. Fleming stared his record career as West Coast Regional Promotion Manager for Island Records where his executive talent was recognized by Chris Blackwell, and he was rapidly promoted Vice President of Black Music. After a brief stint at Third Stone Records under the direction of Dick Rudolph, Kevin was pursued by super producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to become Vice President and General Manager of Perspective Records where he was instrumental in achieving gold and platinum selling results on new and developing artists.
A native of Minneapolis, Fleming knew he wanted to be in entertainment since high school. He attended Clark College in Atlanta, and obtained a degree in Mass Communications, with a focus in Broadcast Management.
Kevin’s early radio career highlights include programming, personality and operations management stops at WCLK, WAOK and WIGO-Atlanta, WXAG-Athens, Georgia, WWDM-Sumter/Columbia, South Carolina and KGFJ-Los Angeles where he was the youngest major market program director in the country. He later served as PD/OM of KACE/KRTO-Los Angeles, the ground-breaking, award winning and much beloved urban adult radio outlet.
After 7 highly successful years at KACE, the station was sold for 700% of its purchase price and Kevin Fleming searched for his next challenge. He was hired by Gavin Magazine, and appointed as its National Urban Editor, where he expanded the magazine’s coverage of urban radio and music, while significantly increasing the department’s sales revenue.
Kevin founded The Urban Buzz, a radio and music entertainment news blog, tip sheet, website and e-blast in 2002. Today, The Urban Buzz is the premier source for urban radio news and urban music information, specifically targeted to urban radio and entertainment industry executives, with over 100,000 monthly views.
Fleming also consulted radio stations in Milwaukee and Minneapolis. KMOJ-Minneapolis is a listener supported non-commercial station. Kevin overhauled the stations imaging, programming, marketing, sales and fundraising efforts resulting in a significant increase in listenership, sales revenue, and listener donations.
In 2006, Kevin was recruited by Radio One, to program the company’s flagship station KKBT-Los Angeles and transformed it into the first-class major market urban adult brand, KRBV. While at V100, Kevin partnered with the Los Angeles Sentinel and created The Taste of Soul, the largest and most successful urban street festival in America, garnering upwards of 300,000 people annually. Despite ratings and revenue success, Radio One sold KRBV in 2008.
In addition to his PD responsibilities at KPFK, Kevin also lectures and shares his knowledge of radio programming and the music industry at schools, conventions and seminars as a radio, internet and entertainment industry expert.
Kevin has been married to Maria Fleming since 1984. They have one son Dylan, a graduate of Hampton University.
